Is there something I can put on in my living room, or some kind of product I can buy, to keep my male cat from marking his territory with his urine? |

The best way to stop marking is to have the cat neutered. However, to stop it in the interim, buy some Urine Gone spray to clean the area and remove the odor. Second, there is a product called Feliway that I have heard is very effective. The manufacturer claims it is "proven to end marking." Go to www.froogle.com and search for it to find places that sell it. I hope this helps your situation.

FELIWAY is an environmental spray containing analogues of naturally occurring facial pheromones that control feline urine marking. Observations have indicated that cats do not leave urine marks on objects previously marked with facial pheromones. Feline urine marking is a natural habit of both male and female cats. By spraying small quantities of urine on vertical surfaces, the cat provides a pheromonal indication of its presence to other cats. Recognized by many cat owners, the main courses of action to combat urine marking have been limited. FELIWAY provides a natural and comforting way to control cat urine marking.
I would also recommend having your male neutered too. Cleaning all visible signs of marking with Natures Miracle or other PET cleaner will also help.
I am happy to be of service. Please reply in kind and ACCEPT my reply.

If your cat is not already neutered, a good place to start is by neutering him. It is also important you try to find out why he has chosen that spot to mark. I have seen cats mark a spot indoors that has been marked outdoors by a stray or roaming cat. If this is the case, my best suggestion is to keep the cat out of the area. This can be done with doors or a Scat Mat placed at the threshold of the room. If this is not the case, then the carpet and the pad need to be cleaned, there are a variety of products on the market. You can also use vinegar or hydrogen peroxide - the key is to soak up the odor by placing paper towels (preferably white_) and a waterproof, heavey object on the treated area and change as needed. The carpet should be pulled back and the pad also treated or replaced - it is not going too far to seal the floor under the pad and carpet after it has been treated and allowed to dry throughly. This can be a tough problem to address, however, not impossible. There are many reasons cats spray and sometimes you have to be one step ahead. Another solution is to again, clean the area throughly, and then keep a small dish of dry food there - cats generally will not urinate where they eat. Also adding a litter box and maybe using "Cat Attract" litter may help solve the problem. Having a multi cat home we have also dealt with marking and once we have figured out the reason we were better able to reach a solution. I hope these suggestions help and let me know if I can be of further assistance.
