Dear MD,
My 10 year old daughter (95 lbs)has complained of abdominal pain since a male associate lifted her with one hand on her abdomin in a military type shoulder press over his head using her as a human dumbell. What type of harm could this manuver cause?

I was not present at the time but did question him. He said she was safe and not harmed. Should I be a concerned about the social implications and lack of judgement on his part to put him self in this type of situation with someone else's daughter?

Thank you

Your 10 year old daughter weighs only 95 pounds, therefore she doesn't have much abdominal fat to protect her internal abdominal organs. Since a military press involved pressing your daughter from underneath using his hands on her abdominal cavity then all of her weight (95 pounds) plus the gravitational weight of her body from above his head onto his hands, was forced into her abdominal cavity. The abdominal organs of the abdominal cavity include the stomach, liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, urinary bladder, small intestine and large intestine. So that the pressure that was placed on these organs would cause trauma. Trauma to abdominal organs can include anything from slight nerve damage to a ruptured peritoneal cavity and peritonitis. I recommend that you have her examined in person. She should have an ultrasound of her abdomen.

Thank you for this interesting question.
