I have acquired a 1956 Continental Mark II with negative ground battery. It has the cables connected to the frame (neg) and starter relay (pos) correctly per the shop manual. Someone has charged the battery in reverse so that the normally negative terminal is now positive. The battery holds 12.4 volts this way. The car starts and runs normally except the ammeter reads discharge. My questions are (1) why doesn't the starter try to turn backwards and (2) what must I do upon installing a new, correctly charged battery to avoid damage or malfunction of the starting/charging system? |
