This appears to be an internal Master Cylinder Leakage, causing the system to not apply pressure to the wheel cylinders and/or the front calipers.Try replacing your Master Cylinder and rebleeding your brakes!

The intermittant sponginess of the brakes indicates a malfunctioning master brake cylinder. Hopefully no contaniment was used to partially top off the brake fluid level such as power steering fluid or motor oil.
At any rate, you're an accident waiting to happen (when you least expect it ...) and since life and limb are at stake (yours and others), it's best to take the high road to your nearest mechanic, especially since it appears that you've done all you can with monitoring and adjusting for this dilemma. Drive slow to safely get there and downshift when stopping. I hope your emergency brake works in a tight situation.
